In January 2022 Moore Concrete Products was awarded the contract to produce a new flood defence scheme for Wirral Council located in West Kirby.
The area was home to a leisure lake but was susceptible to tidal surges and flooding from the Irish Sea.
Due to the location being a busy residential and tourist area the scheme had to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The design was for a wall that would double as a sea defence wall but also serve as seating for the promenade. There were two unit types designed, a convex unit and a concave unit. When placed in sequence these formed a smooth S-shape wave the length of the promenade. A selection of the seating units were engraved with street names from the area as well as being fitted with timber slats for comfort. The timber selected was Cumaru, a timber from South America with a high oil content making it perfect for use in a marine environment.
In a first for MCP we used fiberglass moulds to cast the units in the inverted position. The need for fiberglass was due to the shape of the seat as it curved in two axis as well as having several complex angles. In total 14 moulds, 7 of each type, were used to cast the 432 units required. The scheme was officially opened in May 2023 and was received in the local community with great praise.
