Wall Panels Sam Bonnar

Wall panels were the automatic choice for new Co Antrim sheep unit

Recent weeks have seen the completion of a new lambing shed and sheep unit on the Broughshane farm of Sam Bonnar. He farms with his son Andrew.
The pair will be lambing over the coming weeks.

Sam takes up the story.

“Our previous shed had come to the end of its life so it was a case of putting up a new building or letting the ewes lamb outdoors. I don’t like to keep the sheep out all year round so building a shed was the obvious choice.”

When it came to the construction of the new shed, the Bonnars had the option of using wall panels or building block walls.

“We costed a number of walling options but prestressed wall panels ticked every box. Timing was a major concern as I was particularly worried that the weather might beat us had we gone for the block option.

“Once the steel RSJs were put in place by Barry Smyth, the team from Moore Concrete then had the panels delivered and erected within a number of days. And the quality of the finish is excellent. The site of the shed is quite uneven, so we opted for a range of panel sizes that brought us up to an external wall height of 8 feet.”

The wall panels used were 100mm (4”) thick and ranged between 600mm, 1200mm & 1500mm in height.

Sam explained that he was able to keep the concrete floor of the previous house in situ.

“The straw bedded floor option has always worked well for us. We also opted for a heatguard polycarbonate roof sheeting provided by Greenhill Systems. Everything is now in place and the new shed will be well and truly christened over the coming weeks.”

Moore Concrete’s Jonny McKinney was a recent visitor to the Bonnar farm.

He explained:

“Our prestressed wall panels are available in a range of heights and thicknesses depending on the application. Our wall panels can be used for a wide range of construction purposes. They offer significant time and cost savings over traditional methods.

“There is no need for foundations, as the panels can rest on the post foundation or on a landing bracket, they are then clipped to or slotted in between the RSJ beams, to create a smooth finish.

“We were delighted to have had the opportunity to work with Sam and Andrew. Our Prestressed Wall Panels can also be re-sited if required allowing buildings to be adapted in the future, unlike traditional construction methods.”
