We supplied precast viaduct units to J. Murphy & Sons Ltd, on behalf of Network Rail, to protect one of Cheshire’s most well-known railway bridges.
Vital refurbishment to the Twemlow viaduct in Holmes Chapel is now finished following 11 days of continuous work from the Murphy team to make the railway safer and more reliable. As part of Network Rail’s on-going railway upgrade plan, the Grade-II listed viaduct received a full makeover, including the removal of water stains on the walls, brickwork repairs and waterproofing.
Chris Wright, contracts manager for J. Murphy & Sons Limited, said: “With such a short timeframe to carry out a significant amount of work, this was always going to be a project that pushed us but the team rose to the challenge. We pulled out all the stops and our innovative approach to working meant that we handed back the line to Network Rail as planned.”
The viaduct was built in 1841 and originally designed for the Manchester and Birmingham Railway Company by George W. Buck. It carries the railway over the River Dane, and is constructed in brick and sandstone. The viaduct consists of 23 semi-circular arches, each with a span of 18 metres, and it has a plain stone parapet.
