Crossaig is located in a remote part of west Scotland near skipness in the County of Argyll and Bute. It is the home of Scottish and Southern Energy’s (SSE) power distribution infrastructure, distributing electricity to the surrounding areas.
The scope of the precast elements of the scheme, developed in association with the designer and main contractor Amec Foster Wheeler, was to provide removable access roads so that vital infrastructure improvements could be carried out. As it existed the site was inaccessible to heavy plant and the access road was now on the critical path of the project.
The designed solution involved the manufacture of 15Nr Precast Concrete Portal Frames which allowed the structure to carry the access road and fill above, and 12Nr ballast blocks for along the access road.

The overall design of the structure was developed by Amec FW. Moore Concrete were awarded the scheme and were responsible for the manufacture precast elements to a strict deadline.
Manufacture
The units were poured on their side utilising our box culvert moulds and our joiners’ expertise for the foundations. The ballast blocks were poured on their side with dowel holes provided for ease of assembly over dowels on site. The use of a Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) Mix helped achieve an excellent finish to the formed surface. Galvanised sockets were cast into the top of the units to ensure removal of the units would be possible at the end of the project.
Delivery
Low loaders were used to deliver the units the right way up. With a reduced centre of gravity the units were placed insitu without having to be rotated. Having received the order late October 2014 delivery of the units was completed in early December 2014 with the access road over the two ravines completed in February 2015
