Bunker Walls Deliver Optimal Grain Storage Solution On North Antrim Farm

Increasing the volume of cereals grown is a key focus for Dundarave Properties of Bushmills, Co. Antrim

The completion of a recent development programme on the farm included the construction of a bespoke grain store.

Estate manager, Ian Chapman, takes up the story.

“We managed to get 150 acres of winter cereals planted out last autumn. The crops spilt 50:50 barley and wheat; and the crops are looking very well at the present time.”

Ian continued:

There is significant scope to grow more cereals here at Dundarave. We have the option of feeding the grain to the crossbred Beef Shorthorn cattle on the farm or selling it commercially.

“But fundamentally, we needed appropriate storage facilities for the barley and wheat produced.”

When it came to fitting-out the new grain stores, the Dundarave management team opted for Moore Concrete’s Bunker Walls.

Ian Chapman again:

“The Bunker Walls provided us with total flexibility. The units can be easily moved from location to location with the use of a forklift.

He added:

“We bruise the grain that is fed to the cattle. The Bunker Wall’s provide us with the capacity required to store the grain, both pre and post treatment. The versatility offered by Moore Concrete’s Bunker Walls are big plus for us.”

According to Moore Concrete’s Keri McGivern, Bunker Wall storage solutions are in demand due to the ease of transport. She explained:

“Cereal growers recognise the advantages of having a bulk storage solution that is easily scalable depending on the demands of the farm. Our Bunker Walls are designed to be easily moved around the farm or site as needed.

Keri continued:

“Walls up to three metres in height do not need bolted down when retaining material such as grain, solid fuels, recycling materials, wood chip, potatoes etc.

“Units range from 1.5m to 4.3m metres in height and weigh between 1.2 tonne to 3.6 tonne. Corner units are also available, which allow for bays to be easily formed.”

“The unique curved shape of the base has been developed to allow the free flow of material to the floor and the narrow base design minimises footprint, ensuring efficient use of all storage space.”

“There is also a 100mm straight portion at the bottom edge to aid the removal of material from the bay.”
